So it's about that time when the name game should be starting. However, there is a slight problem, we have no name. Not even a list of names we are picking from. Now don't assume we haven't read the baby name books because we've read, discussed them, and crossed off all the names. Why are there more girls names? We managed to pick out a girls name on the way to the ultrasound and yet a month after learning we were having a boy he has no name (that's not entirely true, he has a middle and a last name, so never mind we are 2/3's of the way there)
So I decided (without George's knowledge;) to allow you to name our first boy. You should be honored, aren't you special? Naming your grandchild,great-grandchild, nephew, great-nephew, 1st cousin once removed, or friends (or strangers but that's kind of creepy (not that you can't read this if you don't know me but maybe it would be best if you don't comment, then again what the heck, if you've got a good idea I'm open to it!)) baby!
Every game has a prize and rules. The prize is, obviously, you name the baby, if you thought it was more than that you really don't know me.
And now the rules:
1. Can't be trendy, if it's in the top 25 of any list in the past couple years forget it (hint: if it ends in "en" ie: aiden, caden, hayden, payden, etc. it's on that list)
2. Must sound like a strong man name, in other words naming him Shannon after me is not acceptable.
3. No aliteration, no offense to my friends and family who have names that start with the same letter as their last name but I'm not into it.
4. George is not an option, we already have one of those.
5. Think about nicknames: yes Josiah is a wonderful name but let's face he'll be called Joe and that puts him at the top of the popular list.
6. Must sound good with Christin and Lindsey, while Zerubabel might be a wonderful name it just doesn't sound that fantastic at the end of the Christmas card.
7. Bible names are great but please consider the Biblical character, ie: Zacheus, great guy, great name, but a wee little man, let's face it no DeVol should start off with a name that already has a short joke built in.
Well, that' enough rules to get you going. So let's hear those suggestiions.
PS. Don't be offended when I shoot them down it's nothing personal, just blame it on the pregnancy hormones!

Well, this might not follow all of your rules, but if you want a strong name, Helepolis is the way to go. Literally means "destroyer of cities." I might name my dog that, so that'd be an added perk that he and my dog would have the same name.

"Trendy" and common are not the same, so my question is, is common ok? I like Matthew, Joseph and Joshua - just off the top of my head - but they're all common names. But they're not trendy, they're timeless. And why does that matter anyway if you're going to homeschool? He's not going to be Joey D. in kindergarten. Unless you name your next son Joey, too. And then he'd have to go by Joey P. or Joey A. Maybe Joey, the first.
Well Jamie just said "Antone Jamison". I thought it was a suggestion. Apparently he was just answering the trivia question the basketball game announcers asked. But it was thrown out there and it's probably as close as you'll get to a suggestion from Jamie. So there ya go.
Ok I just had an epiphany as I was doing my hair. This name is pretty good, but you have to stay with me becuase you might not love it when I say it. Ready? Ok, it's Zachariah.
And here's why it's perfect:
a) It's a strong biblical name
b) The Bible character is not known for being short
c) You have a short middle name picked out (I think) and a relatively short last name, so a 4 syllable name works (unlike say Hotalen which our children will still be learning how to spell in the 6th grade. I feel it is my duty to give them all 3-letter first names. 4-letter tops)
d) While Zachariah is a good strong biblical name, his nickname would be Zach, which fits well with Christin and Lindsey because Zachary was common when the girls' names were. A name like Josiah would on the other hand be totally different.
e) Zachary was number 42 on the popular names list in 2007, but Zachariah was not in the top 50.
Think about it.
Anakin doesn't end in 'en' does that count?
I'm sure Spiderman, Wolverine and Batman aren't in the top names list. Speaking of wolverine, how about Logan?
We had some friends whose last name is Kirk recently had a son and missed the perfect opportunity to name him James Tiberius.
Gershom. It's the name of Moses' son. It means "foreigner" which we all are in this world.
I hate this name, Shannon, I really do. But Justin is pushing hard for it if we have a boy. So I'm thinking you do me a solid and name your kid that so I can say "Oh, but the DeVols JUST named their son that - we can't copy them!"
Strong, not trendy or common, isn't George, doesn't start with "D", helps Renee out: I think this is the winner.
Okay. I've been pondering, and so far I've come up with Simon, or Samuel. I think both flow with Christin and Lindsey (thinking Christmas card here!), and both were names of sons on Seventh Heaven. That's what I have so far, but it IS hard when you don't know what his middle name is going to be!

Also, are you going to reveal the middle name? Or are you keeping it a secret? 'Cause the others are right, you really do need to know the middle name to suggest a first name! (At least let them know it doesn't start with an "A" so they don't have to worry about his initials being BAD, MAD or SAD!!)

I vote for Alexander. It's the English version of Alejandro, which is just so much fun to say, but was shot down by Lou for our own kid. I think it means "defender of men". I also like Levi because of that story (I think in Matthew) where the guy named Levi just dropped everything to follow Jesus. I'm just going to keep thinking of names and suggesting them. Maybe daily. Seriously, you might want to block me from your blog after a week or two. :-)

I'd have to agree with Aunt Linda. I love the name Samuel and think it goes really well with Christin and Lindsey. Although I did think about how we would then have 3 Sams in the family... but I still like it. And Kendra likes it a lot too. And as the only boy Sam he could go by Sammy or Samuel and then it wouldn't be as confusing. Anyway, that's the conclusion Kendra and I came to. We considered Timothy and Andrew, but liked Samuel better. Those names are good too though, if Samuel's out. Love ya! :)
Today I am going with the name Owen. Similar to Evan, yet still different. I also think Amos isn't too bad, but that might be because it makes me think about cookies.. Mmmmm..
No. We cannot have 2 female and one male "Sam"s in the family. It is just too confusing. I like Timothy, though. But, I think Alicia is on to something with Amos. I think the child would be very well liked. No one would even realize the cookie link. They would just be like, "Amos. I like him. And I'm hungry. For cookies."

It IS such a shame because Samuel is a cute name! But I realized after I wrote it that Timothy is out - no DeVol should have to live with "Tiny Tim" hanging over his head. That's just cruel.
I think that I've decided I like names that start with vowels for your kid, because my two choices for today are Emmett or Isaac. Emmett is just a name I came across that you don't hear everyday. Isaac was in the running for our kid, but Lou liked Micah better. Hope you are having a good time in Punta Cana!

I also like Gabriel. Back before I know that Gabbi was a girl, that's the name I wanted for my son. (Oddly enough, I never considered Gabriella for a girl's name until right before she was born.) Anyway, I still love the name, but I thought that if I had a Gabbi and a Gabe, it was using the same name twice. So feel free to use it if you so choose.:-)

Instead of a bible name, have you ever considered the name of a great man of God? I ran into Allison Rue yesterday and was reminded that their son is named Hudson, for Hudson Taylor. James Dobson's grandson is named Lincoln, for Abraham Lincoln. Whose character in history would you most like to see in your child. Jim Elliot? Dwight Moody? C.S. Lewis? Surely there is someone worthy to be so honored....
Ooooooo yeah name him Clive after CS Lewis. Or Staples. Or how 'bout Clive Staples Price DeVol. And we'll call him Jack.

1.) Don't hold back! Even though Shannon and George will ignore us all and pick whatever name they want (I suspect they're doing this just to rule names out), I have loved ALL of your suggestions and have been quite entertained by your cleverness! Keep 'em coming! (If only to entertain me!)
2.) I had a chance to chat face to face with Shannon and George about this whole name thing and trust me, it is NOT the hormonal one who is being microscopically (is that a word?) picky! (Unless expectant dads get hormonal too...)
i saw someone write gabriel, and i love it. my sister named their son gabriel, but you can still use it because they will probably never meet :) plus, "gabe devol" sounds like a good sports name.
I think Gabe DeVol sounds sort of cowboy-ish. (Lower case "c" of course!) And you know how I feel about cowboys. I like it! :-)

You could use Price as a first name and then call Baby Boy DeVol- Price Waterhouse Devol, a very stong name in these uncertain financial times !! Just kiding- my real choice is Gary-Gary Price Devol. I'm not sure how popular that is but I know only 2 Gary's and they are father & son.

Well, I started thinking about how reading these suggestions and thinking about it myself might set me up for a let down. If I think about it too much, I'll choose favorites and least favorites, and if you choose a least favorite, then I won't be able to smile at the kid, and he'll grow up scarred. Then I realized that I'll probably just call him whatever I want. "young Padewan." "Servant Boy." "Igor." "Kunta." All of those endearing nicknames that let him know he has to do my bidding.
Please name the baby soon. Dad has decided on Nolan and has started referring to him that way. I actually like the name...I don't like trying to retrain dad's mind...
The only problem with Nolan (just like Noah) is that it can confuse the kid when you're trying to tell him "NO!" He may think you're saying his name and it might encourage him. You have to get creative and use words like "STOP!", "FREEZE!" and my favorite "I DON'T THINK SO!".
Today I'm gonna vote for Cole. Or maybe Eleazar. Or maybe Garrett. Seriously, I'm running out of names.

After looking at that list, I really like Aaron and Caleb. especially Caleb, I hadn't thought about it before but now I really like it! Caleb Price DeVol sounds nice, CPD isn't anything bad as far as I know, there aren't any famous short Calebs that I know of, and it fits well with Christin and Lindsey. Hm, you would have two C names though, but you can't be too picky!

Well, lets see. In the nursery today there were three Noahs, a Nolan, Luke, Everett, Owen, Sam, TJ, Gibson, & Asher. There were more but I can't think of any others. So, those are the names of Lindsey's generation...Do with it what you wish. :)

Since it's been 10 days since anyone has posted, I'm thinking we're running out of suggestions. So, I'll try to jump start things again with these: Austin, Ryan, Justin, Eric.
You could always go with something classic like Matthew or Adam. Or something different like Titus. Then you could call him Ty. Christin, Lindsey and Ty. Not too bad.. :-)
Okay... I have a couple suggestions and I'm not sure if they've made any of your 59 comments (I can NEVER get 59 stinkin comments on my blog entries! You're a goddess!) Well, i guess now you have 60 including this one.
This first suggestion is just one I love and will most likely use as a middle name for our second son, Benjamin. (Unlike you guys, I have a hard time naming girls and have tons of ease with boy names... our first boy will be Karson... our second, should we have more than one, would (most likely) be Benjamin Levi)...
anyway, the name that I like is Levi... it means like "joined" or "united" or something of that effect.... I just like the name.
However, I sort of like the idea of giving him a 3 syllable first name to match the "flow" of the girls names... Chris-tin-El-la..... Lind-sey-Ma-rie.... So... since he'll have a one syllable middle name, he needs a 3 syllable first name to balance it out... which brings me to my second name;
Elijah... it means "my god is Yahweh" and he was such a great biblical character! It's a strong name and isn't very popular (to my knowledge) and Eli (pronounced E-lie)is a really cute name for a little boy... Eli Devol. Doesn't seem to violate any real rules... but you may just not like it at all.
Another name I really loved when I thought about Christin and Lindsey (both names that are fairly normal and recognizable) was Andrew. It seems to fit in the same category and also has a cute nickname (Andy).... It's also a strong name but you may not like it because of alliteration (even though it's stretching... the alliteration rule to include any name with a "D" present...although that may count in your category).
I like Cooper, but it's a little trendy and I don't see you guys naming your son with a name starting with C (so that there are 2 C's and one L... unless you have an L name picked out for the next kid.... and I just realized that Levi poses the same problem but in Lindsey's favor.....darn).
I like Micah (obviously, as it's a serious consideration for a middle name for our baby)... but it's another nice name "Who is like God?" Good question, Micah!
Finally... a strange choice but I think it could really work...
Nathaniel. It's another 3 syllable name, (which I like)... it's a strong name, has a solid nickname ("Nate"), doesn't violate the rules, and has biblical references... "Nate" was one of the twelve apostles and is described in the Bible as one "in whom there was no guile." And for kicks, he is generally supposed to be the same person as Bartholomew..... so you could also nickname the kid Bart for no reason! lol.
For all I know, you may very well have already named this little bugger, but I thought it would be fun to add a few suggestions!
I just thought I would leave you a random comment, seeing it's been quite a while since anyone has weighed in on the baby name business..
